HUGH WINKLER

Trooper Hugh Winkler, who is commemorated on the war memorial at Harewood School, was born in Timaru on 1 December 1890. He was a carpenter who had volunteered on 17 August 1914, having served before the war in the South Canterbury Territorial unit. He sailed with the Main Body and landed in Gallipoli with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles in May 1915. He was posted as missing on 28 August 1915 in the doomed attempt to capture Hill 60 and his body was never found. A Court of Enquiry in Zeitoun on 14 January 1916 classified him as “missing, believed dead”, and he is commemorated with more than 180 other New Zealand casualties on the Hill 60 (New Zealand) Memorial on Gallipoli.
