WILLIAM O'CALLAGHANPrivate Denis William O'Callaghan was killed in action on 8 August 1915. He had been born in Kaiapoi in 1883 and like Harry Wotton, (who was killed the previous day) he had been educated at Belfast School. He had worked for William Nicholls, a prominent member of the Belfast community and owner of the Kaputone Wool Works before moving to the North Island to establish his own farm. He enlisted on 6 January 1915 and was posted to the Wellington Infantry Regiment. He arrived in Gallipoli with the Fourth Reinforcements and formed part of the Wellington regiment that had borne the brunt of the savage fighting under Lieutenant Colonel Malone on Chunuk Bair. He is commemorated on the New Zealand memorial at Chunuk Bair. Back to The Men from Papanui |
