Private Edward Miller (Bishop Collection, Canterbury Museum, 1923.53.384) |
EDWARD MILLERPrivate Edward Donald Miller was one of the first of the Papanui men to die in the battle of Broodseinde. He had been born in Springston in 1896, but his parents moved to Wilson's Road (now Lagan Street ) in Belfast. On 15 May 1916, at a relatively young age, he married Rose Fisk, and was living in Kaiapoi working as a mill hand when he was called to serve on 17 October 1916. After basic training, he left New Zealand on 17 January 1917, arrived in England in March and left for France on 13 July. Despite his Canterbury roots, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Auckland Infantry Regiment on 14 September 1917. He was reported wounded in action and missing on 4 October, but his body was never found. Edward Miller was reclassified killed in action by a Court of Inquiry held in April 1918, and is commemorated on Panel 2 of the New Zealand Apse at Tyne Cot Cemetery. Back to The Men from Papanui |
