Lance Corporal Victor Albert McIlroy had been born in Dunedin in 1889 and had moved to live in Bligh's Road, working as a labourer at Sisson's farm in Papanui. He had enlisted on 20 October 1915 and arrived in Suez in time to join the 2nd Battalion of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment as it was to move to France. He had been wounded in the arm in the battle for Drop Alley in the Somme on 1 October 1916, and had later been promoted to Lance Corporal on 25 April 1917. He was killed in action near La Basse Ville in Belgium on 6 August 1917 and is commemorated on the New Zealand memorial at Messines Ridge.
