GIBSON LOWTrooper Gibson Low was one of the first men of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles to be killed in Gallipoli. He had been born in the Styx area on 13 August 1886 and had educated at both Papanui District School and Belfast School. On leaving school he had farmed the family property in the Styx area with his brother. He enlisted on the same day as Lewis Leaman, 21 August 1914, and sailed with the Main Body on 16 October 1914. He arrived in Gallipoli with the rest of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles in early May 1915 and helped repel the Turkish attack of 19 May, when 19,000 Turks tried to force the Anzacs off Gallipoli. Gibson Low was killed near Walker 's Ridge on 28 May 1915 and is buried in Canterbury Cemetery at Anzac. Back to The Men from Papanui |
