Private Leslie Jesson, a former student at Harewood School, was killed in action on 7 August 1915 in the climactic battle for Chunuk Bair in the Gallipoli campaign. Quite a short man at 5ft 4inches, he had enlisted in December 1914 and had arrived in Gallipoli in May 1915. Like many other men who served in Gallipoli, his health suffered and he had been evacuated on 3 June to Egypt to recover from enteritis. Five weeks later he was back in Gallipoli and was killed as part of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment's assault on Rhododendron Ridge. Like most other Anzacs, his body was never found and he is commemorated on the New Zealand Memorial at Chunuk Bair. His brother Ernest was to be killed on the Somme the following year.
