GEORGE CRAW

Lance Corporal George Craw had been born at Papanui on 3 December 1890 and before the war had worked as a cleaner for New Zealand Railways. He had attended Harewood School, enlisted in April 1915 and left for Egypt in November 1915. He arrived in Suez in time for the Divisional reorganisation, and served in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade (the "Dinks"). He fought in the Somme battles, then was appointed to the Lewis Gun section as part of the evolving “fire and manoeuvre” tactics and promoted to Lance Corporal on 20 January 1917. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds on 5 August 1917, died the following day and is buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery near Steenwerck.
