WILLIAM BOON

William Henry Boon was born on 15 June 1890, and his late enlistment in May 1918 suggests that he was conscripted rather than a volunteer. Like his brother Henry, he had spent his early years in his family's home in Sawyers' Arms Road in Papanui. He was married to Sophia (nee Stark) and managed his own store in Palmerston North. In October 1918, he was posted to the New Zealand Medical Corps. He served briefly on the hospital ship Maheno before succumbing to illness, probably influenza, and is buried in the Featherston Cemetery.
