ROLAND BELL

Like his namesake Leonard, Roland Bell's military service was very short. He was killed in action on the first day of the Gallipoli landings. He was born in Belfast in 1893 and attended the school there. When war broke out, he was working as a labourer in the Waikato, and so joined the Auckland Infantry Battalion. He enlisted on 20 October 1914 and embarked for military service on 14 December, arriving in Egypt early in 1915. On 25 February he was awarded 2 days CB for "inattention in the ranks".

He was initially reported as being "wounded in action", then later as "wounded and missing" before finally being classified in August 1915 as "killed in action" on 25 April 1915. His body was never found, and he is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli.
